“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.” — (paraphrase, G.K.
I love this, Ariel, and your subversive women. I think of this male/female disparity when my husband can run at night with a flashlight vest and feel completely comfortable, whereas I have to run before dusk and have mace, a blow horn, my phone, and yet still pay attention to my surroundings the whole time I am gone.
I was just discussing this today with another woman in the entertainment business. The fact that we still have to work to claim our power - and be recognized - is horrifying.
thanks for writing about these women - I love love love your books!!!
My family tree is filled with strong, subversive women. I suspect that most family trees are if we just take time to look. Their stories deserve to be remembered and shared.
I felt this deeply and love the last paragraph because it encapsulates what us women deal with daily. I walk with bear spray every morning, and I gave a canister of it to my daughter when she left for college. My son, however, did not get one for his freshman year at college because he did not need one. A sad fact of life. I'm hoping by the time my youngest is a freshman at college she won't need one, but I'm not holding my breath. That is only three years away.
I love this Ariel. I love to write about women's journey to find their strength and break through the chains history has placed on them as well. I admire your intentions to bring subversive women to our awareness, and was fascinated to hear that this emerged in your awareness over time as a writer. I believe these stores inspire women to rise to what they are capable of. Thank you.
Love this!

May I use this essay to read at bookclub in July? We are doing Frozen River! I’m introducing them to you. I’m hoping to be able to find it here.
YES! My favorite books are all about subversive women. That's probably why I'm a fan of your books.

I love this Ariel! Please keep finding more women who bucked the trend and did remarkable things, no matter how big or small :-)
